FIGHTING THE ODDS by Kristen Granata!

Today we have the release day blitz of FIGHTING THE ODDS by Kristen Granata! Check it out and be sure to grab your copy today!

Author: Kristen Granata

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Fighting the Odds:

I’d prepared myself for a life without love. Lost my parents and anyone else I got close to. Nothing good ever stays for long. I’m a statistic after all. Former foster kid. Former drug addict, alcoholic. Always thought I was destined to be alone. Always felt like I wasn’t worth a damn.

Then Carla Evans walked into my life.

One look at her in that uptight, buttoned-up outfit and I knew I had to have her. For a night, I’d indulge myself in the fantasy of a girl like her actually wanting a guy like me.

Then she moved here with no job and that ridiculous bucket list.

I knew she needed my help.

I just didn’t expect to need hers.

I spent a long time letting myself believe I didn’t deserve happiness. It took me a while (and a whole lot of therapy) to realize I’d had it all wrong.

Now I know.

And now I have to tell her.

*This new adult romance flip-flops between the past and present, following TJ’s difficult journey to get to where he is now. Fighting the Odds deals with sensitive topics like drug abuse, death, foster care, homelessness, and miscarriage. But it is also an inspirational story of love, friendship, hope, and finding your inner warrior.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“I’ll take a Corona, please.”

I hand the bartender my fake ID and settle against the back of my stool. She pops the top off the bottle and slides it my way. I take a long swig.

“You don’t strike me as the beer type.”

I hold my hand up without looking at who the deep voice belongs to. “Save your energy for someone else, please.” Can’t a girl sit alone at a bar without being hit on?

“It doesn’t really take much energy to have a conversation, but thanks for your concern.”

I roll my eyes and take another few gulps of my beer. I pretend to watch the TV above the bar, though I can feel the stranger’s eyes on me.

“Who are you rooting for?” he asks.

“The fight you’re staring at so intently. Who are you rooting for?”

“I’m not rooting for anyone. MMA is a barbaric sport. How these guys get paid mega bucks to beat each other up is beyond me. Just another testament to our Neanderthal society.”

“Those guys aren’t just beating each other up.”

I gesture toward the screen. “Those two dudes are throwing punches at each other. That guy is bleeding profusely from his nose. They certainly aren’t doing ballet.”

The stranger chuckles. “Okay, so they are fighting. But there’s more to it than that. It takes skill and training to do what they do.”

“Oh, look. Now they’re on the ground. That guy’s going to lay on top of the other one for the next five minutes. You’re right. Looks like they’ve had a lot of training.” I drain the rest of my beer and stand. So much for enjoying a drink alone.

“You should stay and watch the fight. I’ll prove to you just how much skill these guys have.”

I spin around to face the annoying stranger, allowing myself to look at him for the first time.

Holy muscles.

I clamp my mouth shut to keep it from falling wide open. Brawny. Strapping. Muscular. Built. None of the words coming to mind seem adequate enough to describe the Herculean god sitting before me. It’s almost a sin he covered himself up with all those tattoos. Almost. The intricate pieces of art twist around his muscular arms, all the way down to his knuckles. A tease of ink pokes out of the neckline of his shirt, stopping halfway up his neck. Every inch of his body has trouble written all over it.

His face though … his face is a different story. It’s so handsome it looks like it doesn’t belong on his body. The icy-blue of his eyes is warmed by his smile, which is complete with a set of dimples. A backwards baseball cap covers his hair, but his thick brows and scruff peppering his chiseled jawline are as dark as a cup of coffee.

He’s an oxymoron. The face of an angel with the body of Satan himself. A dark ray of light. A friendly nemesis. The man is menacingly beautiful.

And I’m gawking. I clear my throat and try to remember what it was he’d asked me. “I’ve had a long trip. I’m going to call it a night.”

“Where you coming from?”

“Florida. Just arrived.”

“And the first place you come to is a bar?”

My eyes narrow and I prop my hand on my hip. “Don’t judge me. You don’t know a thing about me.”

His hands shoot up. “Hey, I wasn’t judging. I was just making an observation.”

“Well, don’t do that either.”

About Kristen Granata:

Kristen Granata is a teacher by day, and an (exhausted) author by night. Known for writing emotional New Adult Romance, she loves creating realistic, flawed characters who struggle through the darkest parts of life and come out stronger on the other side. Kristen is a self-proclaimed “bitter cynic trapped in a hopeless romantic’s body.” Her characters pack a sarcastic punch, make you laugh, make you think, make you ugly cry – and they will always live happily ever after. If you’re a lover of moving, inspirational reads, Kristen’s your girl.

Kristen was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1986. She moved to Staten Island with her family and lived there for almost twenty years. There she attended community college and became a teacher. Despite her passion for writing, and despite her professors strongly suggesting she become a writer, she took the more sensible route (bitter cynic, remember?) After going through a difficult divorce when she was only twenty-nine, Kristen returned to writing. The raw story that poured out of her led her to publish her debut novel, Collision, in March of 2018. Soon after in August 2018, the sequel, Avoidance, was published. Her third novel, The Other Brother, released in April 2019.

Kristen openly shares her mental health struggles with depression and anxiety with her Instagram following. Her message is a beacon of hope to anyone who is suffering: You are not alone. She delicately weaves this theme into her writing, and demonstrates the ability of love to heal trauma.

When she’s not teaching or writing, Kristen is reading, Instagramming, indulging in her messy love affair with popcorn, and annoying her wife and step-daughters by incessantly singing along to The Greatest Showman soundtrack.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00019]

We fell onto the bed and lay on our sides, still connected, not wanting this moment to end. “You’re my everything,” he whispered in my ear, making my body melt into him even further.

I didn’t want to move but knew we had to. If we didn’t, Spencer would probably look for us soon. He always seemed to be the one to panic if we got too quiet for a long period of time, which made me start to question him as person.

“Do you have to push yourself so hard today?” Marcus whispered as he planted soft kisses across the top of my back and shoulders.

I wanted to put his mind at ease. “I’ve passed a good chunk on to Sophia and Ethan to figure out. I do have work to do, but I can spend some time maybe watching a movie or helping you cook in the kitchen today. Maybe even call it an early night.”

His voice sounded more jovial at the thought. “Really?” He questioned, as in disbelief, and managed to pump into me one more time with his slowly softening cock.

I pushed down to meet his thrust. “Yes.”

Marcus pulled out of me and had us in the bathroom with the shower running quicker than I could blink. “Then let’s get cleaned up, go downstairs, and do what we have to do so we can get a good, long sleep tonight.” Of course he pulled my hand over to cup his manhood to drive his point home.

Marcus Teaser 1.jpg

I grew up in a small town in South Florida and moved to Central Florida to attend college. There, I married my friend, love, and soul mate and still reside with our amazing son, and a feisty, four-legged little boy.

In my books, I draw on my work background in healthcare and business, along with my husband’s engineering knowledge.

I write in all areas of Romance from tame to off the charts steamy with tons of “edge of your seat” suspense mixed in. If you’re looking for tame, swoon worthy characters, with some historical and paranormal elements, be sure to check out the Remembrance Series. If your preference is for hot dominant alpha males, then you’ll want to give Elusive, A Learning Series, Need Series, and Titan Security a try. Each Need and Titan book are standalone novels with HEAs, no cliffhangers, plus loaded with edge of your seat, heart pounding suspense.

I try to make my writing very personal and close to my heart. Regular life is the inspiration for my books, through watching others to living it, but my imagination takes it to new heights, opening up possibilities that would normally not exist.

In my downtime, I’m a voracious reader. I love to spend time with my family, cook, bbq, create new recipes, play the piano, walk, ride bikes, do cross stitch, dance, and sing. I enjoy the fact that we live in Amusement Park Central and so close to the beach!

Kota put her head around the door of my office and rapped on the doorframe gently. “Knock knock.”
I looked up, took one look at her face and immediately realized there was a problem. “Hey, K, what’s up?”
She wrinkled her nose as though she’d smelled something bad.
“So there’s a ‘client’ in reception who I need your help with. He won’t listen to me, and if he carries on, I’m in danger of punching him in the dick. I decided it was best to call in the big guns before it got ugly. And being as you’re the biggest of the big….” She winked coyly, faux flirting with me, even though we both knew she was doing no such thing. We also knew she didn’t need to in order to get me to do what she wanted. I loved her like a sister—my heart twanged painfully at the thought, as always—and I’d do pretty much anything she needed me to do, in any given circumstance, no questions asked.
I looked over at the monitor that showed me the reception area—there was a camera in every treatment room, also—and squinted a little, analyzing the grainy black-and-white image.
“Is that a kid? Looks like he’s wearing a school uniform.”
She rolled her eyes, popping her gum impatiently.
“Yeah, it is. And he is. And get this. It’s not just any school uniform. Nope, it’s none other than St. Joseph’s.”
“As in St. Joseph’s Academy?” Of course. I should have fucking known. I couldn’t see the crest on the blazer properly in the poor-quality image, but I ought to have recognized the stripes and trims—they’d featured in enough of my nightmares, both asleep and awake, to have permanently imprinted themselves on my psyche.
“The very same. He’s like a baby, and I thi—”
I was out of my seat and marching toward the reception area before she had a chance to finish her sentence. I stormed into the room, practically stomping up to the lone client. Kota scampered behind me, desperately trying to keep in step. I pulled up abruptly and she skidded into my back with an “Oomph.”
“Can I help you?” I didn’t want to be rude, but on the other hand, I didn’t want to be too welcoming, either. Anything even remotely connected to St. Joseph’s made my skin crawl right off the bat.
Mr. St. J’s looked at me with watery blue eyes that seemed to be having trouble focusing. What the fuck? Just as Kota had said, he was young—sixteen, seventeen maybe? Looking at him, I was struck by a strong sense of déjà vu. That feeling and the overwhelming stench of Southern Comfort emanating from his every pore went straight to my gut. SoCo had been the first liquor I ever got sauced on, when I was younger than the little punk standing in front of me. Now it made me want to gag whenever I got even the merest whiff of it.
“Yeah, acshully, you can. I want a tatt of this guy on my asssshh.” He thrust a crumpled photo into my hand. I looked at it. A mostly blond early middle-aged man who seemed vaguely familiar glared out at me. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep the laughter that was threatening to spill out in check.
Oh hell no. Not today, Satan.
“Well given that you’re clearly underage, and under the influence, that is the definition of not gonna happen. The door’s that way.” I nodded toward the front of the store.
“See ya, kid.” I nodded again, turned on my heel and started making my way back to my office.
“Why not, man? I haaaaaaave money. Look.” His voice came out in a sharp burst, like machine gun fire, and probably louder than he’d intended. He jumped a little in surprise.
Christ, he’s fucked up.
He rummaged desperately in the front pocket of his leather backpack and retrieved a handful of scrunched bills. Large bills. The action messed with his balance, and as he made his way toward me, every step seemed more unstable than the last. He thrust the money at me, but I stood still, looking at it as though he was clutching poisonous spiders rather than a considerable amount of cash.
“Here, look seeee.” At another time or place, the slurring might have been kind of funny, but right then it spelled a Class-B misdemeanor, and with my history, up to a year’s jail time. I wanted the kid out of there, stat. Rumpled greens and all.
“I see that, but your money’s no good here, so I suggest you call Mom, Dad, the driver, or the au pair and have someone come get your drunk and/or high ass, because I’ll be tattooing you just after I put a piercing through Satan’s scrotum. So beat it.” Obviously any pretense of manners had flown out the window on one of the kid’s bourbon-infused drunken hiccups.
MV ELLIS knows what it’s like to fall head over heels in love with a badass musician. She followed her heart halfway around the world to be with one. She moved from London to Sydney after a steamy holiday romance with a sexy bass player in sultry Brazil.
